Cloth Diaper Wash Routine - Front Loader

I have read that a lot of people have issues with their washing routine when purchasing a new front loading washer. I have a Maytag 4000 series front load. It works great and is super quiet. I have my diapers in the wash currently. I usually Start it at night because it takes a long time. At least for me. If you have any advice please let me know. My wash routine takes a very long time. It gets the job done though. (this is my halfway through my wash routine) We use OS pocket diapers and fitteds. We have a variety of materials. Cotton, PUL, flannel, knit, suedecloth, bamboo, hemp, microfiber.. etc.

Here is my tedious wash routine.

  • Rinse off poop.
  • Rinse in washer on Rinse and spin - 22 minutes.
  • Heavy soil Wash cycle on hot with extra rinse with detergent- 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Wash with Cold water with no detergent- 50 minutes
  • Rinse - 22 minutes

Either line dry or tumble dry on low.

This is very tedious but Doing any less leaves a build up and not very absorbent diapers. It is worth it. It keeps your diapers clean and leak free. Also keeps the diaper rash away! No build up, no problems.

Detergent has to be cut back a bit with a front load washer. I have washed diapers in a top loader before too. I can really tell the difference. We use 1-2 tbsp of Free and clear detergent. If you are having an issue with build up cut back your detergent by 1/3 of what you use on normal clothes. Some people swear by using 1/4 cup of vinegar as a rinse. I have used it a couple times but not in my washer. It did help strip the residue away. As well as the smell.

I'm currently looking for a good cloth diaper detergent. If you have any stories you would like to share please let me know.
P.S. A front loader also makes prepping diapers much harder, and a longer process. If your new diapers leak, they need to be washed a few more times.
